BMW Motorrad has released a teaser image of its first maxi-scooter for the Indian maxi-scooter featured in the image shared by BMW on social media appears to be the C 400 GT. It could be joined by the C 400 the C 400 GT and C 400 X use the same 350cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine. It produces BHP 7,500 rpm and 35 Nm 5,750 rpm. The engine is mated to a continuously variable transmission CVT.The C 400 range received a few updates in 2021. The scooters come with updated throttle-by-wire and engine management systems, a new exhaust and catalytic converter as well as improved brakes. Speaking of brakes, the scooters come equipped with twin rotors at the front and a single disc at the rear. The C 400 GT gets a revised automatic stability control as well. Mon scoot est en quelque sorte une 1200 RT à embrayage automatique avec quasiment les mêmes possibilités. J’ai eu un 400 peugeot satellis qui avait un excellent rapport qualité prix. Malheureusement il n’est plus distribué. Il est souhaitable en effet de développer les scoot mid size mais en maitrisant le coût. Je suis d’accord également avec le journaliste sur le choix de la cylindrée 400cc mono-cylindre qui me semble le meilleur compromis pour un scooter. Par contre je regrette que BMW ait sacrifié le coffre sur l’autel du design. Autant je peux me passer facilement d’un démarrage sans clé, d’un anti patinage ou d’un pare brise électrique ; autant le coffre riquiqui me fera renoncer à un achat surtout à ce prix. Quand les constructeurs auront-ils compris que les scooters 400 GT ont encore des adeptes en France ? Les nouveaux modèles sont tous des scooters pseudo sportifs de 30 cv avec des marche-pieds minuscules qui interdisent de cruiser , des selles hautes comme des machines d’enduro , des suspensions indignes qui vous secouent à la moindre bosses et des coffres qui rétrécissent à vue d’œil…. De plus, la hauteur de selle est correcte, je mesure 1,74 m et mes deux pieds sont bien à plat au sol. The idea with the C1 was to make driving a scooter more like a car by avoiding the need for a helmet. This idea was hoped to be popular with women, but many jurisdictions didn’t relent on helmet requirements, which undermined BMW’s efforts. This 176cc C1 or 125cc in markets limiting learners to 125cc was sold only in Europe for 2001 – 2002 before being dropped due to slow sales. BMW wouldn’t return to the scooter scene until 10 years later with a new maxi scooter design. This new design was introduced in many jurisdictions for 2012, and eventually was the model that lead to BMW’s first scooter foray to North America in 2013. 2013 After much anticipation, BMW launched two versions of their new C series scooters in Canada and the USA. There was a cheaper and lighter “sport” model called the C 600 Sport above, and then a pricier touring model called the C 650 GT left with more storage and passenger amenities. MODELS C 600 Sport / 650 GT 2014 For 2014 BMW carried over same two models of their C scooters but they did mix up the color palette. Alpine white replaced Silver Metallic for the C 600 Sport, while the C 650 GT was offered in black, brown and blue instead of black, red and bronze. MODELS C 600 Sport / 650 GT 2015 After two years on the North American market, BMW dropped the cheaper C 600 Sport from their line up and only offered in the C 650 GT for 2015. The GT model carried over unchanged aside from a new Grey Granite color options in the USA. The price for this model also rose $500 to $10,490. MODELS C 650 GT 2016 After a year’s absence, the Sport version of the C series returned for 2016 to the USA but not Canada. BMW Motorrad Introduces New BMW C 400 X and C 400 GT Midsize Scooters BMW Motorrad has now upgraded their two midsize scooters and, in addition to some significant technical optimisations, has also given them new colours and styles. Meet the BMW C 400 X and C 400 GT Midsize Scooters! Since 2014 and 2017, the BMW C 400 X has been impressing Urban Mobility segment customers with its dynamic ride characteristics, along side the C 400 GT, as a Gran Turismo variant suitable for touring. Powerful single-cylinder engine according to EU-5 homologation with E-gas, new engine management and optimised centrifugal clutch. As before, the proven efficiency-optimised single-cylinder engine with an output of 25 kW 34 hp at 7 500 rpm and a torque of 35 Nm at 5 750 rpm serves as the drive unit. Power transmission is via a CVT Continuously Variable Transmission gearbox and a torsionally stiff drivetrain swing arm with innovative swing arm bearing for minimum vibration and therefore maximum comfort. Thanks to current EU 5 homologation, the new C 400 X and C 400 GT remain the ideal partners for dynamic, carefree scooter fun. For this reason the engine has been equipped with a so-called “electronic throttle grip” E-gas and an electrically operated throttle valve as well as a new engine management system. Further optimisations are a modified matrix and coating of the catalytic converter, a wideband oxygen sensor, modifications to the cylinder head, a new sensor on the generator cover, an adapted wiring harness and modified idle speed control. The idle speed regulator in the airbox has been omitted and the idle speed control is now carried out via a throttle valve bypass and a turbulence system. In addition to complying with EU-5 homologation, the revised drive impresses riders above all with an even smoother and more sensitive throttle response as well as increased idling stability. In addition to E-gas and new engine management, the optimised springs for the centrifugal clutch also contribute to increasing engine running stability. The tolerance of the spring force was limited, the spring force was slightly increased and the engine speed was slightly raised as the clutch re-engages. Due to the reduced tolerances, the spread of the speed when disengaging the clutch is smaller and belated opening of the clutch – as occasionally known from the predecessor – no longer occurs. Automatic Stability Control ASC with automatic radius calibration and increased regulation quality. Homologation of the full top speed now also for China. In the course of the technical revision, the new BMW C 400 X and C 400 GT also received an optimised ASC. Instead of the previous manual recalibration – for example when changing tyres – the new system now has an automatic radius calibration. In addition, the new ASC is designed for significantly lower friction values than before. When riding, this is noticeable in a more sensitive response and significantly increased regulation comfort – especially on wet and slippery surfaces. Deactivating ASC is now no longer necessary. Until now, the two vehicles were homologated for the Chinese market for a speed of 129 km/h. The legal requirements in China have changed and so it has now become possible to homologate the full top speed of 139 km/h there as in the other markets. Brake system with new front brake calipers and adjusted lever travel of front and rear brakes. Storage compartment with optimised lighting and USB charging socket. The brake system of the new BMW Motorrad C 400 X and C 400 GT has also been revised. Thanks to new brake calipers, the double-disc brake system at the front now offers a more stable and clearly defined pressure point as well as improved roll-back behaviour of the brake pistons. This is accompanied by aligned lever travels for the rear brake on the left and the front brake on the right for a symmetrical braking feel. The optimised lighting of the storage compartment volume 31 l, 45 l with Flexcase under the seat bench improves comfort significantly. The lighting now no longer comes from the side, but from above for even better illumination. In addition to the 12-volt onboard socket, the front right storage compartment is now equipped with a USB charging socket. Two new attractive colours each as well as the style variants “Sport” C 400 X and “Triple Black” C 400 GT. As before the new BMW C 400 X and C 400 GT also feature the unmistakable design language of BMW Motorrad. Modern and future-oriented looks reflect the BMW Motorrad design philosophy perfectly. BMW Motorrad has had the C400X and C400GT on their urban mobility segment since 2018 and 2019 respectively, so you'll be pleased to hear that there’s an update of these nifty looking scooters for 2021! Of course, maxi-scooters are a bit of a love em or hate em affair, some will absolutely love the versatility and dynamic riding offered by a larger scooter like this - whilst others won’t be able to look past the style. Either way, both models will be receiving quite a raft of updates for 2021, with E-gas’, a new engine management system and optimised centrifugal clutch bringing Euro 5 refinements to the 350cc single-cylinder motor, despite still providing 34 bhp and 35Nm of torque with peak torque available 250 revs lower. Euro-5 updates for BMW scooters C400X & C400GTE-gas’ isn’t some form of electronic fuel, by the way, it’s actually an electronic throttle grip with partnering electronically operated throttle valve like a ride-by-wire system, and paired with the CVT transmission and centrifugal clutch will overall promise a much smoother ride, with far greater stability particularly when idling.
